A retrospective of Bulas’ career and life’s journey.
The public is invited to Creative Nomad Studios between September 10-12 and 14-16 for a unique retrospective of Marlene Bulas’ work entitled Honouring Marlene Bulas. The exhibit honours Bulas’ career and life’s journey with dozens of her paintings on display and for sale in support of CFUW Orillia Education Foundation’s Scholarship Fund.
Marlene has been a long-time member of Canadian Federation of University Women, Orillia and donated many of her paintings to their fundraising efforts. She has worked in oil, acrylic and watercolour, telling stories with her paintings, often with humour. She explains, “I love to sketch and observe the local landscapes, villages and everyday objects that make up our lives. I am fascinated by the way light falls on an object, the shadows it makes and the colours, both obvious and subtle.”
Bulas often says her paintings serve as a metaphor for “life’s journey”. In bright, vivid images she took us to villages, along country roads, to the water and into our homes. Her dynamic, colourful landscapes and still life pieces celebrated Canada and our way of life.
As a child, she was encouraged to paint by her mother. She would draw, paint pictures and make paper dolls. She put art aside while she and her husband Walt raised three children. “When my children were grown, I had an opportunity to rediscover my joy of painting,” she says. “I took numerous art workshops, attended art school and started on my art journey — a source of never-ending enrichment.” She said she was inspired during her career by local scenes and regions such as Oro-Medonte, Georgian Bay, Orillia and “the land in between.”
Marlene’s work has the distinct look of artistic licence balanced with realism. It has a unique, contemporary style, and is featured in many private collections at home and abroad. You can purchase work for your own collection during the show, Honouring Marlene Bulas
